Chinese Tariffs Effecting Glove Prices
On 13 August 2019 the United States Trade Representative announced next steps in the process of imposing additional 10% tariffs on Chinese imports. The previous proposed “List 4” was divided into two parts: “List 4A” (effective 1 September 2019) and “List 4B” (effective 15 December 2019). Sempermed imports from China only gloves manufactured of plastic, such as vinyl and polyethylene. These products are included on “List 4B.” As a result, proposed additional tariffs for these gloves are delayed until 15 December 2019. On 23 August 2019 it was announced that the proposed tariffs taking effect on 15 December 2019 will be increased by 5%. If imposed, the tariffs will result in necessary price adjustments no later than February 1, 2020. As expected, these price increases will be passed along to glove consumers.

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes in “List 4” of proposed tariffs that affect Sempermed products are as follows (as published in the Federal Register, Vol. 84; 17 May 2019):

1. 3926.20.10: includes seamless vinyl medical and non-medical gloves offered by Sempermed

2. 3926.20.40:includes seamed poly gloves offered by Sempermed

As trade talks continue between the US and China, both sides are working to reach a deal. Potentially, the proposed additional tariff may not be enacted in return for China buying $40-$50 billion in U.S. agricultural products. The United States has threatened that if a deal is not in place by 15 December, the tariffs will go into effect.

Please rest assured that Sempermed is closely monitoring the situation and will communicate further details as they become available.
